PCNL is a technique used to remove certain stones in the kidney or upper ureter (the tube that drains urine from the kidney to the bladder) that are too large for other forms of stone treatment such as shock wave lithotripsy or ureteroscopy. For kidney and ureteral stones that are too large (usually larger than 2 centimeters), too numerous, or too dense to be treated by extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) or ureteroscopy, PCNL (percutaneous nephrolithotomy or stone extraction) offers a minimally invasive method of removing these stones.
URS for Kidney Stones:
Ureteroscopy with laser lithotripsy (URS) may be used for stones up to 2 centimeters in size located anywhere in the ureter or kidney. This procedure involves passing a small diameter fiberoptic ureteroscope through the bladder and into the ureter, allowing the surgeon to see the stone.
